Country style kitchens have been a long time favorite for years. The kitchen in every home is the heart of that home. It’s what makes a house a home. This is where anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, and everyday gatherings take place making memories that last for years.
Country kitchens have a lot of Early American character. With solid wood cabinets either varnished or painted white with black hinges, and white glass front cabinet doors. When people see kitchens in this style it often reminds them of roosters, cows, pigs and various other farm animals. This is the theme many people use when they have a favorite animal, they like to decorate their homes with some using more than one animal.
When choosing appliances for your country style kitchen choose the traditional white appliances. You can change it up a bit by choosing a textured front for your refrigerator but the stove should be the traditional white.
Usually country kitchens are large kitchens often having the kitchen and dining area as one room with the table being in the center of the kitchen. Most cases it’s essential that the table and chairs be of the country style. Country style chairs are high backed wooden chairs sometimes having cushions or decorated seats. Country style tables are usually made of solid wood displaying knots from the trees they were made from. Off to the side is usually a hutch or buffet that completes the country style theme.
One of the greatest things about having a country style kitchen is that most of the accessories and decorations you need can be found at garage sales, flea markets, tag sales and church bazaars. A well placed butter churn or cast iron skillets will create the look that will remind you of grandma’s house where you grew up as a child. You can hang various sizes of cast iron skilled on a wall or use your counter top to display a butter churn. Many country style decorations may look old but are actually brand new.
When decorating windows use curtains that have the country theme such as barn yard animals. Be sure to use the same color in both the kitchen and dining area. If you don’t like barn yard animals use rustic hues such as rust, dark reds, blues, gold yellows, dark greens and browns in either solids or prints. As for style, the most popular is the cafe style which is separate curtains for the top and bottom. To really add country style charm to your windows instead of curtains use wood shutters on both the top and bottom portions of the window.
When it comes to lighting nothing says country style more than a wrought iron chandelier. Wrought iron chandeliers make a statement that is not dressy or elegant but just warm and cozy. You can also use brass and copper chandeliers, although they are a bit more difficult to find. Hang one over the dining table as well as in the center of your kitchen area.
