Old World Style Kitchens

The Old World Style is basically a type of decorating the reflects an old fashioned style. Usually an Old World style kitchen is designed to appear antiquated while maintaining a degree of elegance that makes the kitchen comfortable yet sophisticated. Many times a kitchen that is designed in the Old World style resembles an old English cottage.

The Old World style is the most popular kitchen design and with good reason. In recent years, this style have been gaining popularity because the design reminds people of days gone by that makes them feel good. Rustic kitchens are perfect for log cabin and many outdoor themes which is very popular in Colorado. Old World style kitchens are always the perfect choice.

Some of the features of Old World kitchens include exposed ceiling beams, antique finished cabinets, large arched windows and doors and stone fireplaces. Colors are used the have a calming effect such as maroon, off white, dark blue, brown and dark green.

With so many new styles and modern amenities, kitchens have undergone total transformations including the appliances. Kitchen counters, tiles, and boards have also been transformed. However, many people today prefer to give their Old World kitchen a traditional and authentic look so they choose to have interior designers redesign their kitchens.

Old World style kitchens are very unique. They are heavily decorated with layered finishes, unique door styles and stacked moldings. Oak or cherry wood are two of the most common woods used for Old World kitchens. Some of the kitchen accessories include chopping blocks, copper pots, crocks, baskets and assorted antique serving pieces. Old World kitchen floors are either made of finished wood or tiles. The wood or tiles that are used have varying degrees of darkness often distressed and painted with sanded edges to make them round. The kitchen walls are painted with either stucco, faux finishes to give the distressed look or textured finishes. Hardware and various fixtures are filled hammered iron. The fixtures and hardware in the kitchen look heavy and bulky giving an antique appearance. The kitchen is designed with a cooking center that resembles an open hearth and various pieces of furniture are placed loosely throughout the kitchen. Many times tables are used as island and have open areas for storage.

Old World kitchens use large stacked moldings combinations from the ceiling. The ceilings are usually beamed using antique beams even beams from old barns. Crown posts and large arches are also used. Counter tops are usually designed use either rustic tile, stone, or wood.

Old World style kitchens are perfect for larger homes that have large families. If you have a smaller home, this style would not be practical or affordable since to scale down this style would be very expensive. The beauty of this style can still be seen to this day in home from the 1800′s era. Usually the entire home is of the Old World style with the kitchen often being referred to as from the dark ages.
