Victorian Style Kitchens

Many of us hold onto memories of when we were children that we often think about as adults. The memories of grandma’s kitchen and the wonderful smells of when she would bake our favorite treats. Grandma was always cooking or baking something that we always enjoy. This is what inspired the Victorian style kitchens. This style has a simple yet elegant look. If you are thinking about updating your kitchen and you are a bit nostalgic, then the Victorian style may be just what you’re looking for.

Creating a Victorian style kitchen is easy and inexpensive. You can find most of the accessories at antique stores, online auctions, estate auctions, flea markets, garage sales, even church bazaars.

Typical Victorian style colors are mauve, cream, and light blue. There are several different ways you can use these colors in your kitchen. For example, you can paint the doors of your kitchen cabinets white and trim them in blue or the opposite. Use mauve accessories on your counter tops which can be made of butcher’s block or a solid color.

Use plenty of wrought iron accessories, flower pots and a wrought iron coat rack at the back door. Hang a shelf on your wall to display an assortment of candle holders and candles.

Using any one of the three Victorian colors make curtains for your windows or buy them. Combine the colors using one color for the curtain and a contrasting color for the trim. Make the ruffles wide and trim them with lace to complete the Victorian style. Be sure that the tablecloth has the same color scheme or pattern of the windows complete with lace.

If you have a large kitchen decorate with a wash stand or small dresser. You can find these items at flea markets and garage sales. If you are the do it yourself type you can sand them down and paint them white. You can also add Victorian style accessories to place on top. When decorating place the larger pieces of furniture first then follow through with the smaller items. This is the best way to keep the look clean and simple.

Walls can be your best friends when updating your kitchen to the Victorian style. Hang wicker fans with small bunches of flowers on your walls. Add a few diamond or square shaped mirrors with white frames around the fans.. With the Victorian style, its all about color, accessories and decorating. The Victorian style is very similar to the Cottage style so that should help you get a few decorating ideas.

Last but not least is your kitchen floor. You can either paint your floor in a beautiful cream tone or use a cream colored linoleum. Keeping the floor in a neutral color gives you the ability to add more color throughout the kitchen plus make your kitchen appear larger. If you have a fireplace in your kitchen, that is the perfect place for a round braided rug with the stove, refrigerator and sink be the other good places.
